Programme Overview

Bayer provides a practical intrauterine (IUT) fitter training programme for suitably qualified Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) in the UK. Training is delivered by a Bayer-contracted College Registered Trainer to support you in gaining your Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques (LoC IUT).

This programme is provided through a non-promotional Bayer Donations and Grants (DAGs) service and is not linked to Bayer Women's Health medicines.

The training is designed to equip you with the evidence-based knowledge, attitudes and skills required to:

Consult with a woman requesting contraception
Appropriately provide intrauterine methods (IUD/IUS)
Manage complications and side effects in accordance with the relevant summary of product characteristics and guidelines

The LoC IUT is awarded by the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH, previously the faculty) to those who successfully complete the training. The Bayer training programme is registered with the CoSRH as a peripatetic programme covering the whole of the United Kingdom.

Programme eligibility criteria

For Bayer to provide this training, three criteria must be met — covering the practice, the nominated healthcare professional (HCP), and the practice environment.

1: Demonstrated Clinical Need

The practice/institution must demonstrate a clinical need for a new IUT fitter. Examples include:

Replacing retiring or departing staff who currently provide IUT fitting services
Establishing a new IUT fitting service (with a minimum of 12 fittings per year)
Expanding an existing service to meet patient demand

2: Nominated HCP Requirements

The nominated HCP trainee must have:

Be a registered HCP licensed to practise in the UK through a CoSRH-recognised professional body

General Pharmaceutical Council (UK)
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland
Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (UK)

B: FSRH / CoSRH Qualification

Hold one of the following:

A current FSRH Diploma (DFSRH), MFSRH or FFSRH — may proceed directly to the LoC IUT

A current FSRH Online Theory Assessment (OTA) pass certificate (must not expire during the training period)

C: Key Clinical Competencies

The nominated HCP must confirm they:

Have the experience and skill to conduct a competent clinical consultation
Are up to date with resuscitation and anaphylaxis training (must be recognised by the UK Resuscitation Council and maintained for the duration of training)
Are competent in giving an intramuscular injection
Are competent in undertaking a speculum examination
Have read the current FSRH/CoSRH guidance on intrauterine contraception
Are up to date with Levels 1–3 safeguarding children and young people (Level 3 must be maintained throughout training)
Have read the 6 principles of care as outlined in the "Guidance for those undertaking or recertifying CoSRH qualifications whose personal beliefs conflict with the provision of abortion or any method of contraception" and agree to abide by them in practice
Have completed the e-SRH module 15

3: Practice Requirements

The practice/institution must confirm the following will be in place during the training period:

Indemnity insurance covering an IUT fitting service (covering doctors and/or nurses as fitters)
Access to suitable equipment to perform the relevant medical procedures, including equipment for resuscitation and anaphylaxis management
A suitable closed room/area available for face-to-face training sessions on-site

What the Programme Provides

If you are eligible and your application is approved, Bayer will provide:

A registered trainer in intrauterine techniques assigned to your practice/institution
Up to 4 practical training sessions of face-to-face supervision
- Each session: 3.5 hours
- Total training time: 14 hours
- Delivered over a maximum of 6 months
All sessions conducted on-site in a closed area/room at your practice
In exceptional circumstances, an additional session or an extension to the training period may be provided, subject to prior approval from Bayer

All training is completed through a CoSRH-recognised General Training Programme (GTP).

It is at the discretion of the practice to nominate a named member of staff employed within the practice to be the trainee.

I’ve not yet passed the Online Theory Assessment (OTA), what should I do?

Visit https://www.cosrh.org/Public/Education-and-Training/letter-of-competence-intrauterine-techniques-loc-iut.aspx (Link directs to a webiste not controlled by Bayer)
Register with CoSRH (free at this point)
Register with e-learning for health (free) and learn and revise from the sexual and reproductive healthcare modules
18 modules in total, you don’t need to complete them all, but they are all relevant to the OTA and are a useful resource for revision
Module 15 is the relevant module for the LoC IUT and you will need to have completed this module
When you feel prepared and ready to take the OTA you will need to register and pay the CoSRH (refer to their website for the latest fees https://www.cosrh.org/Public/Education-and-Training/letter-of-competence-intrauterine-techniques-loc-iut.aspx), you then have 6 months to complete the assessment
When you have passed the OTA, we can then review your application for IUT training

Other important things to note

The LoC IUT application must be submitted within 2 years of passing the OTA unless you hold a FSRH Diploma (DFSRH), Fellowship of the FSRH (FFSRH) or are a Member of the College .
FSRH (MFSRH), when the application can be made at any point if the qualification is up to date and recertification has occurred if required.
Healthcare Professionals, who are not prescribers, will need to consider what mechanisms are in place for the supply and/or administration of intrauterine contraception and local anaesthetic (if used), Patient Group Directives (PGDs) may need to be put in place.
Women who are postpartum/breastfeeding may be at increased risk of perforation.
There are no official training requirements for the removal of intrauterine contraceptives.
